Steven Gerrard paid a seriously emotional tribute to Xabi Alonso after the Spaniard announced his retirement from football this summer.

The Bayern Munich midfielder confirmed this morning that he's hanging up the boots at the end of this season - bringing the curtain down on an illustrious career which saw him win almost everything with a host of top clubs and the Spanish national team.

He'll go down as one of the best central midfielders ever for his spells with Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

But it's Alonso's time at Anfield that he might look back most fondly at.

He may not have won the Premier League there, but he won the Champions League, Super Cup and FA Cup in his five years as a Red, making 210 appearances and becoming a firm favourite with the fans and his team-mates.

Anfield legend Gerrard certainly remembers their time together well - as shown with his gushing tribute to Alonso on Instagram:

Liverpool fans - we hope you grabbed the tissues before reading that.

Alonso is 35 now, but still at the top of his game with Bayern. He'll be hoping to retire with some more honours domestically and in Europe to add to the 16 major trophies he's already won in his career.
