Six Records That Barcelona Star Lionel Messi Could Break In 2019

Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi has the opportunity to equal or break these six different records in 2019. Will he be able to do it, though?

Lionel Messi could have a busy year ahead of him with the different records that he could break.

The Barcelona captain is reportedly making his return to international duty for the 2019 Copa América, but the Argentine magician won't let that distract him from the other achievements that he could rack up in his illustrious career.

According to Marca, the 31-year-old forward could either reach or smash six records in 2019.

Barça manager Ernesto Valverde could still secure a treble for the defending La Liga champions. If that happens, then Messi would have won 36 trophies at the same club.

It would mean that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner would reach the same number of honours as Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs.

Outside of the trophy haul, there's probably no denying that Messi would want to cement his legacy with the club even further through the number of appearances that he has made.

The Spanish newspaper reports that he has the third highest appearances for the club, with an incredible 657 matches played.

With that being said, he needs 18 appearances to surpass Barça legend Andrés Iniesta, who has 674 matches to his name.

Xavi holds the record number of appearances at 767, and while the Argentine has no intention of hanging up his boots, he'll be gunning for that record after he is done with Iniesta.

Returning to La Liga for a moment, Messi is 11 victories shy from matching the one player with the most wins in the league. The current record holder is none other than ex-Real Madrid 'keeper Iker Casillas, who has 334 wins to his name.

Marca awards the Pichichi honour to the top scorer in La Liga.

Messi has won it five times and could be looking to secure it for the sixth time in his career. If he picks up the award this season, then he would equal the record set by Athletic Bilbao legend Telmo Zarra.

Oh, and as the newspaper has pointed out, Messi currently sits on an unbelievable 398 goals scored.

It might seem like fate that he is only two goals shy from hitting the 400 mark in the league. If the Barça ace wants to do it in style, then a hat-trick would allow him to break another record at the same time.

That's right, Messi only needs one more hat-trick to hit his 50th of his career.

Should Messi keep up his fine goal-scoring form from 2018, then he could secure a sixth Golden Boot and his third one in a row.

According to Marca, it would be an achievement that 'no other has achieved in the history of the sport.'

How many of these records will Messi break in 2019?

Let us know in the comments.
