Lionel Messi's performance for Argentina against Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup has been turned into a compilation using stunning 4K quality.

Argentina managed automatic qualification for the tournament in Russia after Messi scored a superb hat-trick against Ecuador in the qualifying rounds.

But the two-time World Cup winners struggled when the competition came around in 2018.

Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw against Iceland before they lost 3-0 to eventual finalists Croatia.

La Albiceleste came close to crashing out of the World Cup when they came up against Nigeria at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg.

Now, one YouTube user has uploaded Messi's stunning performance from the match in 4K as Argentina narrowly edged out Nigeria.

Messi made a darting run as Ever Banega floated a superb ball over the Nigeria backline and into the path of the Barcelona superstar.

The 33-year-old Argentina captain managed to cushion the ball on his left thigh and brought it under control with a second touch off his left boot.

Messi kept the ball out of Kenneth Omeruo's path before he unleashed a superb strike past Francis Uzoho to fire Argentina into the lead in the 14th minute.

Argentina's lead disappeared after half-time as a Javier Mascherano error allowed Victor Moses to step up for a penalty and he pulled back an equaliser for Nigeria.

La Albiceleste managed to secure victory late on and avoided an early embarrassing exit after Marcos Rojo connected with a brilliant first-time volley from a Gabriel Mercado cross.

Argentina finished second in Group D -- five points behind Croatia -- after their 2-1 win over Nigeria in Saint Petersburg.

"We were confident we would win this game. It's wonderful to have won it this way -- it is a well-deserved joy," Messi said at the time.

"I thank all the people who are here, for all their sacrifice, and all those who are in Argentina who were always with us. The shirt of the national team is above all."
