It may have been widely expected that former AC Milan and Real Madrid playmaker Kaka would retire from football after the Brazilian played his final game for Orlando City recently, but until today the Ballon d'Or winner has failed to make an official announcement about his future.

However, the playing days of one of this generation's most mercurial talents is indeed officially at an end, with the World Cup winner announcing that he is ready for his next journey via an Instagram post.

The 2007 Ballon d'Or winner captioned his post with the message, "Father, It was much more than I could ever imagined. Thank you! I'm now ready for the next journey. In Jesus name. Amen."

And no sooner had Kaka taken to social media to make the announcement, than the tributes started pouring in for the Brazilian ace.

Kaka is, almost notoriously now, the last footballer to win a Ballon d'Or that isn't named Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo and was briefly the world's most expensive footballer, when Real Madrid parted with Β£59 million for his services, in 2009.

The playmaker represented his country 92 times, scoring 29 goals and lifting the 2002 World Cup. He also won the 2007 Champions League with AC Milan, as well as a Serie A title in 2004. He was also part of Real Madrid's 2012 La Liga winning side.

What a career. What a player.
