Liverpool have had many cult-heroes grace the famous red shirt but one player who particularly endeared himself to the loyal faithfuls was Dirk Kuyt, and his latest comments regarding a potential transfer to Spurs will only further cement his legacy.

Despite lacking the clear physical attributes as well as possessing a limited skill set, the Dutchman excelled in the desire, work rate and tenacity department while becoming a fan favourite.

He was their everyman. And it helps if you bag a hat-trick against the old enemy, Manchester United. Not to mention giving your army of Liverpool fans a shout out after beating them in the Europa League.

But before joining the Reds, Kuyt had the opportunity to link up with fellow compatriot Martin Jol at Spurs, though rejected their advances.

"A year before I went to Liverpool, I had the opportunity to go to Spurs." He told FourFourTwo magazine via Goal.

The striker explains how Jol and Daniel Levy were hellbent on him sealing a move to The Lane.

"The manager, Martin Jol, and chairman, Daniel Levy, expressed an interest. But it was on transfer deadline day, and at that time I didn't want to move."

Then the stuff which will leave Liverpool fans gushing. "Later on, Liverpool became the number one club who wanted me, although all the negotiations took a while."

And the interest wasn't restricted to England as La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid were also keen on snapping him up. Yet, once Liverpool entered the race, it was the only destination.

"Other clubs showed an interest too, such as Atletico Madrid. That's also a nice club, but once I'd heard of Liverpool's interest, it was the only club I wanted to go to. From a young age I'd always liked Liverpool."
