News came through on Thursday evening that Claudio Ranieri had been sacked as Leicester City manager, just a day after taking charge of a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla in the Champions League - with that away goal potentially being crucial in the tie.

The timing perplexed many, even if champions Leicester have been a shadow of themselves this season and are currently lurched in 17th place, just one point above the relegation zone.

Ranieri guided Leicester to an unimaginable title win last season and was incredibly popular thanks to his wit and charm, particularly in his interviews and press conferences.

'Dilly Ding Dilly Dong' was one of his most memorable phrases:

For a while, there was no reaction on social media from Leicester City's players for a man who brought the very best out of them last season, but goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel did pen a classy tribute to the Italian.

The Dane thanked Ranieri for all that he did for Leicester on the whole and Schmeichel personally and signed off the message with "Thanks boss".

Here is the post on Schmeichel's Instagram:

Schmeichel's tribute follows on from Jose Mourinho's gesture; the Manchester United boss wore a United training shirt that contained the initials of Ranieri.

Ranieri, formerly of Chelsea, Juventus, Valencia and others, has remained a classy man after his sacking.

Yesterday The 65-year-old received a touching gift from a family and he then took a picture with the kids outside his home.

He received a card at his home in Leicestershire and returned the favour by posing for pictures. What a guy.

Here is the footage of Ranieri remaining the nicest bloke ever:

What do you make of Ranieri's sacking?
