Following in the footsteps of his father, seven-year-old Kai Rooney is training with a Premier League club in what could be the embryonic stages of a fledgling football career.

However, Rooney junior has been training on the other side of Manchester from his Dad, attending training sessions at Manchester City's football academy.

The United captain has shown up several times to the City Football Academy, according to The Daily Mail, having previously played at United's academy since October.

Kai has been watched by his Dad and Granddad, Wayne snr, during his sessions with City's under 7's, where the England skipper has reportedly mingled with parents who were initially surprised to see the Manchester United captain on City territory.

One coach at the City academy shed a little light on how youngsters at that age are developed, telling The Mail, "Most of them want to be a No 9, but it's all about them enjoying their football at this age. You are not looking to see if they are a centre forward or a holding midfielder, but can they play with their head up? Are they two footed? How do they pass? Can they listen and learn?"

Rooney isn't the first United player to have his son attend City's academy, either, with Robin van Persie's son Shaqeel (now at Fenerbahce) and Andy Cole's son Devante (now with Fleetwood Town) both starting out on the blue half of Manchester.

Premier League clubs are not allowed to officially sign players until the age of nine, meaning Kai could yet turn out for several other top flight clubs over the next two years. Maybe Everton fancy taking another Rooney on board?
