José Mourinho has spoken about why Mohamed Salah's time at Chelsea was cut short.

The 55-year-old Portuguese manager signed the 26-year-old Egypt international from Basel in 2014 for a reported fee of £11m.

The Liverpool ace only made 13 appearances during his time at Stamford Bridge, spending one of his seasons on loan at Fiorentina.

Following on from a loan spell at Roma, Salah would make his move to the Italian club permanent in 2016.

Now, the former Manchester United, Inter Milan and Chelsea boss has said that he was not responsible for selling him to Roma.

"Lots of things have been said that are not true," he told beIN Sports.

"People try to identify me as the coach that sold Salah, I am the coach that bought Salah. We played Basel when he was a kid and I fell in love with him.

"I pushed the club to buy him. At the time, we had fantastic attacking players, [Eden] Hazard and Willian, but I told them to buy that kid.

"We decided to loan him out to Italy where the football is tactical and physical. Fiorentina are a good team without the pressure of the title. But when the club decided to sell him it was not me."

Liverpool signed Salah in 2017 and he has made a real impact at the club.

In his first season at Anfield, he took home the Premier League Golden Boot after he scored 32 times in 36 league matches.

Mourinho also offered his two cents on Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as an important exchange that he had with Roman Abramovich over the signing of Didier Drogba.
