Jordan Pickford emerged the hero after England's dramatic Round of 16 win over Columbia.

The Three Lions' penalty record has been awful at World Cups, but this time things were different, as star player Pickford made two vital saves that helped England progress to the quarterfinals.

But it hasn't all rosy for Pickford this tournament. In England's last group game against Belgium many felt he led with the wrong hand and ultimately could've saved Adnan Januzaj's goal.

It was quite unfair in hindsight, but many are quick to criticise players during the World Cup, especially when it comes to England footballers.

And press can be tough, and so what the Everton goalkeeper didn't need is a fellow professional Premier League goal sticking the knife in still further.

Courtois said after the game to Belgium publication voetbal24:

"The goalkeeper is 10cm smaller than me. I would have caught it.

"He was too busy throwing his legs in the air."

But after his stunning performance, Pickford has stuck one right back on the Chelsea keeper.

Pickford said: I have got power and agility. I don't care if I'm not the biggest keeper because it's about being there in the moment and making the save, and I was."

And social media were quick to twist the knife into Courtois, too.

Do we feel bad for him?...Nah, don't be silly.

We would like to see Courtois make the save Pickford pulled off late against Colombia on Tuesday. It is easily the save of the tournament so far.

Will this war of words continue? Can Pickford earn a spot as the best goalie of the World Cup 2018? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
