It's not often Jonjo Shelvey will hold a record as an England international, but the Newcastle United midfielder is currently in possession of a stat which shames the state of coaching in the English game.

The former Liverpool midfielder is the last player to start for England who was actually managed by an English manager at club level, according to Daniel Taylor's recent piece for The Guardian.

Shelvey played under Garry Monk at Swansea, with his last game for the Three Lions coming during a European Championship qualifier against Lithuania in Vilnius. Shelvey is now of course managed by Rafa Benitez, at Newcastle after moving to St. James' Park during the January transfer window.

Before Shelvey, Jack Butland held the record, having played under Lee Clark at Birmingham City. Worse than that though, is the fact an England starter at a major tournament hasn't had an English boss at club level since 2010, when Jermain Defoe and David James, coached by Harry Redknapp and Steve Cotterill, respectively, representing the Three Lions during another ill fated World Cup campaign.

The stat highlights just how pointless it is for the FA to be obsessing over the nationality of the next England manager when the pickings are so woefully slim.
