Manchester United returned to winning ways with a victory over bottom club Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the opener half-an-hour into the game when he collected the ball on the edge of the box, displayed unrivalled strength to hold off Billy Jones and rolled the ball into the bottom corner.

Ibrahimovic's compatriot Sebastian Larsson was sent off in the first half after referee Craig Pawson deemed his challenge on Ander Herrera to be over the top and dangerous.

That killed any hopes of Sunderland giving a good account of themselves and from then on it was a routine win and display for United.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan struck a minute after the restart, before Ibrahimović played substitute Marcus Rashford through in the last minute to make it 3-0.

Sunderland were never really in the game after the sending off, while United didn't have the urgency to go goal-crazy given the have an important Europa League clash with Anderlecht coming up.

After the game, Jermain Defoe, rarely involved in the game having received barely any service, came up with a brilliant gesture.

As per journalist Henry Winter, the former Spurs striker waited by the tunnel for his upstart Marcus Rashford to come off the pitch so that he could give him his shirt from the game.

A great token of appreciation from the master to the apprentice.
