It's difficult to argue with his decision.

A lot has happened in the Premier League in the calendar year. And whilst we've still got the busy Christmas period to come in the next week Jamie Redknapp is in no doubt who the player of 2016 is.

At the beginning of the year most people were still trying to argue with themselves that Leicester City surely couldn't win the league and 11 months on we're all trying to convince ourselves they won't go down, surely!

As mad as Leicester's change in fortune has been this year it's also incredible to think of the turnaround Chelsea have had from the beginning of the year's woeful form to being seven points clear at Christmas.

So it's no surprise really that when asked by Sky Sports who the best player of 2016 is Jamie Redknapp picked the one man who links the two teams, N'Golo Kante:

"It is quite an easy one this - N'Golo Kante - his performances at Leicester last season were just phenomenal.

"I have never seen a player cover so much ground and work so hard for his team, never waste a ball, and play with so much energy.

"You can see the impact he is now having at Chelsea - he has had some 2016. He did not cost that much money either, but what a player. A superstar."

Kante was easily one of the Foxes players of the season as Claudio Ranieri's team won surprisingly won the Premier League, he was arguably the most unheralded of the trio including himself, Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy.

This season the French midfielder has continued his brilliant form and has adapted well in Chelsea's new 3-4-3 formation in a good partnership with Nemanja Matic.

2016 has definitely been N'Golo Kante's year but who will 2017 belong to?
