After the spitting storm which emerged as a story late on Sunday evening, Jamie Carragher's past comments on spitting have been doing the rounds again.

Back in 2015, both Jonny Evans and Papiss Cisse were found guilty of spitting at one another in a Premier League game between Newcastle and Manchester United, with the pair hit with six and seven game bans respectively.

After the charges, which were accepted by Cisse but contested by Evans, Carra wrote a column for the Daily Mail and gave his opinion on the punishment, deeming it to be excessive despite branding it "vile" and "disgusting".

"As usual, there have been a number of people who have said 'it is the worst thing that can happen on a pitch'," the Liverpool legend wrote.

"It is vile but let me assure you now I would have preferred Lucas Neill to have spat at me the day he broke my leg in September 2003.

"I was spat at once in my career. It came during a UEFA Cup game against Celta Vigo in 1998 and the player in question was a Russian midfielder called Aleksandr Mostovoi.

"I was shocked more than angry when he did it because I couldn't believe what had happened.

"Cisse has admitted being in the wrong and hit with a seven-game ban. I know it is a disgusting thing to do but I do think that punishment seems a little excessive, particularly if you compare it to an over-the-top tackle that would 'only' get three games."

Those comments certainly make for interesting reading after recent events.

The Sky Sports pundit has apologised after a video of him spitting at a Manchester United fan and his 14-year old daughter in a car on Saturday emerged online.

In footage obtained by The Mirror, the former England international was driving in his car and being goaded by the United fan after Liverpool's 2-1 defeat.

The supporter was heard saying "Unlucky Jamie lad!" and "2-1!". After the fan wound his window down, Carragher reacted by spitting towards them.

In the clip filmed by the Dad, the girl says "He spat on me" and adds, "On my face" when he asks where it hit her.

Carragher has since issued the following apology on Twitter:

Sky, Carragher's employers, have said his behaviour was "unacceptable" and that they are dealing with the matter. It will be interesting to see if he appears on Monday Night Football tonight as scheduled.
