Jamie Carragher has argued that Liverpool should drop Roberto Firmino in favour of the in-form Diogo Jota.

Jota, 23, arrived at Anfield in September after Liverpool splashed a reported £41m (rising to £45m with add-ons) to secure his services from Wolves.

The Portuguese forward has settled in well at the Reds and already scored seven times in 11 appearances across all competitions.

However, Firmino has come under criticism after scoring only once and registering two assists in 12 appearances for Liverpool this season.

Jota's instant impact has already led to many fans calling for the former Wolves star to start ahead of the 29-year-old Brazilian.

Liverpool legend Carragher, 42, has now offered his verdict on the ongoing debate surrounding Jota and Firmino.

When he was asked who are Liverpool's strongest front three, the Sky Sports pundit told talkSPORT: "Mane, Jota, Salah.

"Firmino isn't in great form right now but that could change if Liverpool get to a final, but I don't think he was in great form last season either.

"Even though Liverpool won the league, certain things got masked. Firmino didn't score a goal at home in the Premier League until the last game against Chelsea.

"Liverpool fans are educated enough to know that Firmino's role is not to be scoring the goals.

"Liverpool's goalscorers play wide and they know he can create, win the ball back and start the press.

"But even when I looked at his pressing stats last weekend, they aren't the numbers they usually are. It doesn't mean if he goes out and Jota goes in that's the end of his career.

"He should just sit on the bench for three or four games."

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has also offered his thoughts on who should be starting out of Jota and Firmino.
