Manchester United have the most expensive squad ever, as per research from The CIES Football Observatory.

Jose Mourinho and Manchester United spent big in the summer in the hope of bringing the club back to the level they were at previously. The likes of Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were signed, as was the world record move to bring Paul Pogba.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free represents a bargain for United, but the Swede's wages make up for his lack of transfer fee; Ibrahimovic is said to be pocketing around £10 million a year at Old Trafford.

CIES have worked out that the summer dealings means United's overall spending on transfers and wages is over the £600m mark (€718 million euros). Real Madrid were previously the most expensively assembled squad, but Mourinho's United have now overtaken them; Madrid's current squad is said to be worth over £550m (€634 million euros).

Manchester City are in third place after their summer business, Pep Guardiola's squad believed to be have took £530m (€611 million euros) to put together.

There's more representatives from the Premier League in the top 10. Chelsea are in 5th place, Arsenal lie in 8th while Liverpool are 10th.

In the top 20, Everton, West Ham and Southampton all feature - highlighting the funds available to Premier League sides in the current climate.
