There was incredible drama on the final day of the Brazilian top flight as Internacional had a 97th minute title winner disallowed.

With league leaders Flamengo losing 2-1 to Sao Paulo, the Porto Alegre outfit needed to score a winner against Corinthians to seal a first league title since 1979.

In the first half they had a penalty overturned by VAR and then a goal disallowed, but the worst was yet to come in the dying embers.

A crazy end to the game - and the season on the whole - saw the hosts produce a flowing team move down the left flank and pick out captain Edenilson at the far post.

He tapped home into the empty net and wheeled away in celebration, removing his shirt as substitutes and staff darted onto the pitch.

However, the linesman's flag went up for offside and VAR showed that although it was a tight call, the correct decision was reached.

Agonisingly for Internacional, their stalemate on the final matchday meant Flamengo retained the Brazilian Serie A title despite defeat.

They won it by one point after beating their title rivals in the penultimate fixture on Sunday.

Incredibly, an Internacional fan paid nearly $200,000 so on-loan Flamengo player Rodinei could play against his parent club but it backfired big time as the 29-year-old was sent off in the top of the table clash.

Inter had been one point clear going into the game.
