Jose Mourinho has responded to Graeme Souness following his criticism of Paul Pogba.

The former Liverpool star continued his obsession with the French international by insisting he's a 'country mile from being a great player.'

"Paul Pogba is capable of great things, but a country mile from being a great player," he wrote.

Souness added: "(Pogba) still doesn't understand what is required to play that position properly.

"Pogba simply cannot be one of two in central midfield. You cannot rely on him. Against the lesser teams you'll get away with it, but against the better teams you're not going to. He plays like a schoolboy running after the ball in the playground.

Pogba failed to make an impression on United's Premier League game on Sunday.

His side loss 1-0 to Newcastle United, with the player not completing the full 90-minutes. Though, it's clear that he's struggling with an injury.

And a day removed from the defeat, Mourinho has fired back at Souness.

"You ask Graeme Souness. Paul (Graeme) Souness comments and is responsible for his comments, not me," he said.

Before explaining his decision to drag off the midfielder.

"I wanted a better way to come out in the first phase against a team that was defending in a very compact block.

"I was trying that with the simplicity of Michael Carrick because he tries to make everything simple and bring Alexis [Sanchez] close to an area to [Romelu] Lukaku where he could be like a second striker to try to win the game," Mourinho added.

As well as Souness, fellow Sky pundit Thierry Henry also weighed in on Pogba's current state of affairs.

While claiming he needs to adapt and be efficient.

Before giving Souness an unbelievable look.

Meanwhile, Mourinho puts the Premier League campaign aside for the next two meetings.

United travel to Huddersfield in the FA Cup fifth round before taking on Sevilla in the Champions League.
