Heung-Min Son Opens Up About Doing Military Training

Heung-Min Son Opens Up About Doing Military Training

Spurs star Heung-Min Son says he "enjoyed "his mandatory military training he took part in during lockdown.

Son reported for duty in his native South Korea on April 20 to complete his mandatory three week training and although he was used to a different type of shooting, the former Hamburg forward grew to enjoy the experience.

"It was a good experience," the 27-year-old told the club's Twitter account.

"I couldn't say everything that I've done but I enjoyed it. The three weeks were tough.

"On the first days no one knew each other so it was a bit weird, but soon we got to know each other. You have to spend every day together, there were ten people in one room so we got very close.

"We were working together, helping each other. In the first days the other guys couldn't even speak to me but by the end we were joking and enjoying together."

Son was with the marine corps in Jeju Island and learnt how to fire a rifle, be exposed to tear gas and take part in a 30km loaded march.

In South Korea, all men are obliged to partake in 21 months military service by the age of 28 but Son was able to reduce this to basic training after helping his country win the 2018 Asian Games.

His reaction after beating Japan 2-1 in the final was beautiful, as a jubilant Son ran onto the pitch, running and jumping around, hugging his teammates and manager in some quite incredible scenes.
