He'll line up in the Manchester United team to face Liverpool this afternoon at Old Trafford, but things could have been very different for Henrikh Mkhitaryan if he'd listened to Brendan Rodgers several years ago.

The Armenia midfielder moved to the Red Devils last summer from Borussia Dortmund and has established himself as one of the club's key players in recent months.

But, according to the man himself, he could've easily ended up as a Liverpool player, had their former manager been successful with his attempts to sign him.

Speaking ahead of United's showdown with Liverpool, Mkhitaryan explained the dilemma he faced when deciding his future via the Daily Mail.

He said: "I spoke two or three times on the phone to (Liverpool manager) Brendan Rodgers, he was saying he really wanted me and that I'd get to play with Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard.

"Half of me thought I had to go there, the other half was not so confident, that the gap to the Premier League might be too big for a skinny player from the Ukrainian League.

"Two weeks later, Jurgen Klopp broke off his holiday on an island next to Denmark to come and see me in Dortmund.

"I knew he had a good reputation for working with younger players and, after we met, I felt more comfortable to sign for Dortmund. I think I made the right decision."

The rest, as they say, is history.

Who knows what might have happened if the attacking midfielder has ended up at Anfield, but Liverpool will almost certainly wish he was playing for them later today.

Do you think he made the right decision?
