The Catalan giants put their faltering league start aside to resume their Champions League campaign tonight against Dynamo Kiev.

But Messi hasn't travelled to Ukraine with Ronald Koeman resting his star man ahead of their European fixture.

Though the 33-year-old could return to action on Sunday when his side face Osasuna and ahead of potentially returning to the starting XI on the weekend, a video of him looking 'abandoned' in training has surfaced on social media.

The video shows Messi looking rather lonely with a coach putting an arm around him during the session.

Messi's mood didn't go unnoticed by Barcelona supporters.

One Twitter user wrote: "He is clearly hurt. No one to support him within the club, on the field or off the field."

A second tweeted: "He's exhausted mentally, went through so many things that I don't know how can he still keep up. It 100% has a major effect on his form."

A third added: "This is really heartbreaking. He feels lonely and abandoned in a place he called home his entire life."

Speaking at Barcelona's pre-match press conference, Koeman confirmed Messi's absence from tonight's Champions League match.

"We've got various players out due to injuries and we've decided that we won't be taking Leo or Frenkie because the situation in the Champions League is quite comfortable for us with the nine points that we've got," he said.

"And these two players need to rest because they've played a lot of matches.

"So we think this is a good moment to rest them."
