Harry Maguire has launched a scathing attack on critics of Manchester United by insisting that they want them to fail "because of the success we've had in the past."

The Red Devils were under significant pressure after they suffered back-to-back defeats to Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men returned to winning ways in their 3-1 comeback victory over Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Maguire, who has been criticised for his form in recent weeks, claimed he and his teammates are criticised more heavily because they play for the "biggest club in the world."

And the 27-year-old United skipper admitted that it can be "difficult for the lads" when dealing with the criticism of playing for a club like the Red Devils.

Speaking in a video posted by United's Twitter account, Maguire explained: "At this club, one thing I've noticed in my time here -- I've been here a year and a half -- is we are the most talked-about club in the world.

"Why? Because we are the biggest club in the world. People don't want us to do well. Why? Probably because of the success we've had in the past.

"We have to live up to that, we have to react to it and don't let the negatives get into our bubble inside the training ground. Sometimes it is difficult for the lads."

Maguire put in an impressive display against Everton as United bounced back from their shock 2-1 defeat in Istanbul on Wednesday.

Bernard opened the scoring for Everton in the first half before a Bruno Fernandes brace sent United 2-1 up at half-time.

Edinson Cavani slammed home United's third deep into second-half stoppage time to seal all three points for his side and ease the pressure on the under-fire Solskjaer.

Solskjaer insisted in an extraordinary post-match interview that United had been "set up to fail" due to their schedule for matches.
