Lionel Messi Has Explained His Telephone Celebration Against Celta

What was the Argentine's gesture about?

Lionel Messi was at his vintage best for Barcelona last night, opening the scoring in a 5-0 defeat of Celta Vigo with a trademark effort, followed by a less than trademark celebration.

The Argentine would add another goal in the second half and help himself to a couple of assists for good measure, but the main talking point of his display was, unusually, the phone call celebration he opted for.

Whether it's in an actual match or training, Messi's equally as devastating

The opening effort was typical Messi, embarrassing a Celta defender before curling into the corner. Then, after being mobbed by his teammates, the number 10 pointed to the crowds in the Camp Nou and made a telephone signal with his hand.

Of course, with this being a celebration the five time Ballon d'Or winner had never used before, all sorts of theories were being thrown around as to what it could possibly mean; Was it in reference to new contract discussions or something to do with the current managerial situation at the Camp Nou, with Luis Enrique recently announcing his intention to leave his post at the end of the season.

The 'call me' gesture was, unsurprisingly, nothing to do with either of those things and instead, a message to his nephew, son of his brother Rodrigo, who was in attendance for his uncle's devastating display.

Rodrigo's son had been calling his uncle in the days leading up to the match, but with no success. Hopefully he received an answer after last night's game, though.
