Gilbert Burns and Leon Edwards have gone back and forth on Twitter over who should be be next in line for a title shot against Kamaru Usman.

The Nigerian Nightmare made a successful second defence of his welterweight title with an unanimous victory over Jorge Masvidal in the main event of UFC 251 at Flash Forum in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

Masvidal took the fight on six days' notice and cut 20lbs after original challenger Burns tested positive for COVID-19 prior to the main event.

Burns, who recently beat Demian Maia and former champion Tyron Woodley in quick succession, is still slated to face Usman in the future as per UFC president Dana White.

But after ESPN's Ariel Helwani proposed the Brazilian face Brit Edwards in what would effectively be a No.1 contender bout, an enjoyable Twitter exchange ensued.

Edwards hit back at 'Durinho', claiming he's only in his current position because of "good luck and good circumstance" and saying, "You knocked out a 46 year old jujitsu [sic] guy and a washed woodley sit the f*ck down".

Burns questioned Edwards' wins over Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone and Gunnar Nelson before stating that Rafael dos Anjos, his last opponent, "wasn't in the top five".

'Durinho' re-iterated that White has already gone on record to say he's next in line, to which Edwards replied by telling him he only got the fight with Woodley because he couldn't.

Burns finished the spat by telling Edwards he isn't worthy of a title fight due to his inactivity and he should brace himself for a fight with Masvidal or Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson.
