The fan who invaded the pitch during Portugal's quarter-final victory over Poland has discovered his punishment after he was caught and removed from the pitch by a security team.

The fan, 22-year-old Shamshir Karimi from Switzerland, attempted to hug Cristiano Ronaldo during extra-time, describing the Portugal captain as his "idol". However, Karimi's actions have cost him €500 and a month long ban from France.

The incident was not the first time a fan has raced onto the pitch during Euro 2016 to meet Ronaldo, as another opportunistic follower evaded security to snap a selfie with the Real Madrid man after the goalless draw with Austria, in the group stage. Ronaldo did grant the fan permission to take the photo, but the pitch invasion has since caused UEFA to open up a disciplinary procedure which will be resolved on July 21, while the Portuguese FA were handed a fine.
