Steven Gerrard tore into his Rangers side after they lost 2-1 away to Kilmarnock in a result that might just have ended their title challenge.

The Glasgow outfit went 1-0 up in the first half through Scott Arfield but late goals from Stephen O'Donnell and Eamonn Brophy inflicted a second defeat in five games.

After being neck and neck with rivals Celtic not too long ago, the Gers are now ten points behind the leaders - albeit with a game in hand.

In an honest post-match interview, while Killie players were celebrating the big win, Gerrard criticised his team for their second-half collapse and their lack of character and mentality.

He told BT Sport: "I thought we had the mentality and the characters to sustain a push but on the evidence of the last four-five weeks I'm getting proven wrong.

"We came here tonight and it was a pressure game in a stadium where you know you are going to be under the cosh. The reality is that we couldn't cope.

"But having said that, it's me as well because I'm responsible for that group of players.

"I put this group together. I coach them, they are my tactics and decisions. So I'm not going to sit here and try and force any blame in any other direction than myself.

"It's disappointing, it's frustrating at the moment. We keep going, we keep fighting and see where we are. But on the evidence of the second half tonight, it's very worrying for me right now."

Gerrard also referred to Celtic as "the other people" and his comments following the bitter blow has led many to troll him for what they believe is another title bottling scenario.

Gerrard had previously stated that Liverpool ending their drought without a league title would help him get over his infamous costly slip in 2014, as long as he was successful with Rangers at the same time.

"I think winning the league would definitely play a part," he said on The Greatest Game with Jamie Carragher.

"And I think also my own personal stuff with Rangers, if I go on to have a successful season, I think that will help as well, because that was a f*cking tough moment, even tougher than what people probably think it was. The only time in a 20-year career I've been numb, like my body's felt numb."
