Gerard Pique could face a 12-match ban from the Spanish FA for his furious outburst against Real Madrid.

The Spanish FA are reportedly set to investigate comments made by the Barcelona star in a recent interview.

He shared his thoughts on refereeing in Spain, controversially claiming match officials favour Real in a scathing rant.

Pique was reacting to reports saying that many former referees in Spain were Real fans.

The defender said that if La Liga referees supported his side's arch rivals, they would "unconsciously" give decisions their way when overseeing matches.

Speaking to Post United, he exclaimed: "The other day a former referee said that 85 per cent of the referees are from Madrid.

"How are they not going to whistle in favour of Madrid.

"Even unconsciously, how are they not going to give more for one side than the other?

"I respect the professionalism of the referees and I know they try to do their best job, but when a moment of doubt comes."

Pique's claim doesn't necessarily add up based on this season as the Catalan giants have been awarded 12 penalties to Real's three.

And the pair of clubs have both been shown the same number of yellow cards (36) and have both had one player red carded.

As a result of his remarks about officials favouring Real, the 34-year-old could face a ban between four and 12 games, according to reports via Spanish outlet Diario Sport who also add that he could be fined.

He could be slapped with a fine ranging from €600-€3,000 if he is found guilty of breaching guidelines.

Pique is currently sidelined after sustaining a knee injury against Atletico Madrid last November.
