Gary Neville has suggested that Jesse Lingard "needs to leave" Manchester United after returning from his impressive loan spell at West Ham.

Lingard reunited with former United manager David Moyes in January when he was loaned out to the Hammers.

And the 28-year-old England international rediscovered his best form as he scored nine times and registered five assists in 16 appearances for West Ham.

Lingard, whose current United deal expires in 2022, returned to Old Trafford in the summer after his time with the Hammers came to an end.

Moyes was keen to bring Lingard back to West Ham in the summer transfer window, but United reportedly set a £30m asking price for the player.

Speaking on Sky Sports' The Overlap fan debate, Neville insisted that Lingard should exit Old Trafford after "what he experienced last season."

The United legend explained: "Jesse needs to leave for Jesse. He got pride last year playing at West Ham.

"He's the man there and he'll come back here and play 15 games, and be a good squad player, but he doesn't want that again surely after what he experienced last season.

"Jesse needs to leave for Jesse Lingard."

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that Lingard was "still in my plans" and expected him to be at the Red Devils for the "start of the season."

However, United legend Roy Keane was in the same camp as Neville after claiming that Lingard should seek first-team football elsewhere.

"Jesse Lingard, the players like that in the background, they're [Manchester United] going to have to shift them on," he said on The Overlap.

"I don't think [he has done enough to stay]. I don't think Jesse Lingard is going to get Man United back challenging for titles.

"I think he did well at West Ham and maybe that type of club is a good club for him."

United kicked off their Premier League campaign with an emphatic 5-1 win over Leeds United at Old Trafford on Saturday.
