Gary Neville paid Harry Kane with an incredible compliment after he compared him to Zinedine Zidane this evening.

The Spurs striker was irresistible in the 2-0 win over Manchester City, grabbing a ninth assist of the season for Giovani Lo Celso's goal as Jose Mourinho's side moved to the top of the table.

Kane wasn't on the scoresheet after seeing an effort ruled out in the first half for offside but his performance was a complete one - full of superb link-up and work-rate.

The 27-year-old was even defending the channels on many an occasion as he continues to reinvent himself on the pitch.

Neville was on co-commentary for the game on Sky Sports and said the England captain reminded him of France and Real Madrid legend Zidane, one of the most gifted players in football history.

"He's playing brilliantly in that role, Harry Kane. I'm gonna get mocked for saying this, but there's a little bit of Zidane in him when he gets the ball in that position with how he sort of shields it and protects it," Neville said.

"Yeah, it's the physicality, the touch in the way he gets the ball, protects it and shields it. No-one can get near him.

"Well, I couldn't (laughs)."

Neville has regularly praised Kane and he is evolving his game by dropping deep and contributing deeper in different ways. He now has 45 goal involvements under Mourinho and Neville felt today was one of his very best showings.

The former Manchester United man added: "He is messing with them like you wouldn't believe. I remember a few years ago when they played at Wembley against Liverpool, Harry Kane was sensational, I think against Dejan Lovren that day - I think he got substituted.

"This is as good as I've seen him since then. He's had some brilliant games, but in a top game, a hard game against Man City, he's been spectacular."
