Is it just us, or does Michael Owen get a particularly rough time from football fans?

The former Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid forward seems to take more stick than most pundits on TV these days, and now a section of football fans have had enough.

Since hanging up his boots in 2013, Owen has been giving his thoughtful analysis on Premier League and Champions League matches for broadcasters BT Sport, much to the annoyance of some football fans.

But his career could be in jeopardy after a petition was started to bar Owen from ever being allowed to commentate on a live football match ever again.

The ex-England international was in the co-comms chair for the Liverpool v Manchester United Europa League tie on Thursday night, and that appears to be the straw that broke the camel's back for some fans.

The petition was launched earlier today and so far has around 400 signatures. If it reaches the half a million mark, the government will decide whether or not to debate the issue in parliament - although we're some way off that.

You can view - or sign - the petition here.
