Sevilla player Joan Jordan hilariously attempted to drag Lionel Messi down to the floor out of desperation in stopping the Barcelona captain.

Barcelona travelled to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan on Saturday and claimed a 2-0 victory over Sevilla.

Goals from Ousmane Dembele and Messi moved Barcelona two points within La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid, though Diego Simeone's men have two matches in hand.

Messi, 33, has been in fine form in recent weeks and is currently top of the Spanish league's goalscoring charts.

And the Argentine superstar showed exactly how hard it is to play against him when Jordan made a last-ditch effort to stop him.

The 26-year-old Spanish midfielder was spotted lunging at the back of Messi's shirt late into the second half.

Unfortunately for Jordan, Messi had breezed right past him and the Sevilla player only managed to grab a fistful of his shirt for mere seconds.

Jordan's desperation against the six-time Ballon d'Or winner earned him a yellow card, but fans also mocked him for his approach in trying to bring Messi down.

"The look on his [Jordan] face. He wanted to kill him, FFS," one fan said.

While another tweeted: "He's behaving like a pitch intruder."

A third fan posted: "It's so impressive how he just rarely gets thrown off the ball. I always loved that about [Messi]."

And a fourth Twitter user wrote: "The commentator was like he has to use a net next time."

Someone else added: "Looks like Messi was really, really on the run, it looks short of an assault."

Speaking ahead of the match, Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui branded Messi as the "best player in history."

Barcelona will return to action on Wednesday as they host Sevilla at the Camp Nou for their second-leg Copa del Rey clash.

Sevilla won the first-leg semi-final tie 2-0 at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan earlier this month.
