Chile fans were in disbelief as Eduardo Vargas horribly attempted a Panenka penalty deep into injury time when his side were losing 3-0 to Peru.

The Tigres UANL forward, 29, had the opportunity to salvage one goal for his side and decided to try his luck with a fancy penalty instead.

But the ex-Napoli man was left red-faced when he attempted a Panenka penalty and Pedro Gallese plucked the ball from the sky.

And the camera cut to show the Chile fans watching on in embarrassment at Vargas' attempt to showboat.

Edison Flores opened the scoring in the first half at the Arena do Grêmio and Yoshimar Yotún doubled their lead before half-time.

And Paolo Guerrero added his name to the scoresheet in injury time to seal Peru's progression to the Copa América final and dump Chile out of the semi-finals.

Ricardo Gareca's men will now travel to the Maracanã on Sunday for the final against Brazil, who progressed after beating Argentina 2-0 on Wednesday.

And the Peru boss, 61, praised his side for bouncing back from their 5-0 thrashing at the hands of the host nation earlier in the tournament.

"We've come through some tough moments in the Copa and we deserve to be in the final," the Argentine manager said.

"We managed to overcome the huge adversity that was this defeat to Brazil that was hastily judged and provoked a wave of harsh criticism."

But Peru captain Guerrero admitted that his side have a tough challenge in beating Brazil in the final.

"It was a derby against Chile, a difficult match, we prepared well and won it very well," the ex-Bayern Munich and Hamburger player said.

"We kept our concentration and we're in the final. Now we have to work hard and think about Brazil. It will be a very difficult final."
