Peter Crouch said Xabi Alonso and Nagore Aranburu brushed aside the incident, but Jamie Carragher wasn't as nice about it as they were.

Peter Crouch recalled that he was left in awe at seeing a "Spanish-looking woman" when he signed for Liverpool, only to later learn it was the wife of Xabi Alonso.

The 40-year-old former striker arrived at Anfield in 2005 after the Reds secured his services from Southampton for £7m.

Crouch made 135 appearances for Liverpool and scored 42 times during his three-year spell at the Premier League club.

However, the ex-England international revealed that an "amazing" dark-haired woman caught his eye at the reception when he was staying at Hope Street Hotel.

Crouch told Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher about the women, with his former teammate calling over the other senior players so he could tell them about her, too.

Unbeknownst to the former Liverpool player, the woman in question turned out to be Alonso's partner, Nagore Aranburu.

Crouch wrote in his column for The Daily Mail in 2018: "On signing for Liverpool, I stayed at the Hope Street Hotel.

"On reception was a girl so good-looking I couldn't quite believe she was smiling at me all the time.

"I told the lads in training. 'Honestly, she's beautiful. I think I've got a shout here.'

"Jamie Carragher called a few other senior players over. 'Tell them again, Crouchie.' So I did. 'She's all over me. I'm on fire.'

"Carra again, all interest. 'What does she look like?'

"'Amazing. Dark-haired. Spanish-looking. I'm in there.' It turned out she was Xabi Alonso's partner. She was doing a bit of work to practise her language skills.

"He was nice about it. So was she. Carra less so."

Alonso tied the knot with Aranburu in 2009 and the couple have had three children together: Jontxu, Ane and Emma.

The 39-year-old Spain legend was a fan-favourite during his time at Anfield and lifted an FA Cup and Champions League with Liverpool.

Crouch left Liverpool in 2008 and went on to play for Portsmouth, Tottenham, Stoke City and Burnley.

The former Stoke City star called it time on his professional football career in 2019.
