Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are in the top five centre back partnerships in Premier League history, according to former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O'Hara.

On Tuesday it was confirmed that Alderweireld had left Spurs, to join Qatar side Al-Duhail, after the Belgian had just one year left on his contract in north London.

The 32-year-old spent six years at the Premier League club and made 243 appearances for them, reaching a Champions League and Carabao Cup final.

During his first five years in the English capital, Alderweireld had a great partnership with fellow countryman Vertonghen, before the 34-year-old left for Benfica last summer.

The pair were very good together and an important part of Spurs' best period during the history of the Premier League, despite never winning anything.

That's led O'Hara to claim they're amongst the top five centre back partnerships in the history of the league.

Over the years it's often been discussed who the best pairing in the Premier League era has been, with three partnerships always at the forefront.

Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Chelsea's John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho and Arsenal's Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure are generally accepted as the three best.

However the replies to O'Hara's controversial opinion show that there's plenty of names in the contest for the rest of the top five, without Alderweireld and Vertonghen.

O'Hara has been known for his controversial punditry opinions and his bias towards Spurs, during his time on talkSPORT.

Presenter Laura Woods put the former midfielder in his place a few months ago when he said Nuno Espirito Santo's side were in a better place to sign someone than Arsenal.
