Juan Mata put the hosts ahead earlier but the Rams levelled courtesy of one of the greatest free-kicks in recent memory from Liverpool loanee Harry Wilson.
Then, Jack Marriott popped up late on with his first goal for the club - following up Mason Mount's effort after it was saved by former Derby goalkeeper Lee Grant, on for Mata after Sergio Romero was shown red for handling the ball outside the area.
It sent the visiting fans absolutely mental in the away end - though there was a quick check for offside from the referee before the goal was given.

But just as it looked Lampard was on the verge of celebrating his biggest managerial win to date, substitute Marouane Fellaini did what he does best by heading home at the far post deep into stoppage time to take the game to penalties.
Derby would then prevail after a tense shoot-out where Phil Jones missed the decisive spot-kick. The England international stepped up after a slew of brilliant penalties had been scored but saw his tame effort saved by Scott Carson, who guessed right.
It continues a pretty shocking run of penalty shoot-outs for United, as they have now lost their last five in all competitions.
