Where Are They Now? England’s Euro Under-19 Winners Three Years On

From Tottenham's 'new Messi' to a Premier League superstar to a player currently without a club...

Three years ago, England won UEFA's Euro Under-19 Championship, beating Portugal 2-1 in the final - but how have the players who lifted the trophy kicked on since?

The England U19 victory in Georgia was a landmark moment. With England U20s winning their World Cup a month earlier, it sparked talk of a wealth of young talent (though the words 'Golden Generation' are banned by UK law).

This is where manager Keith Downing's Young Lions are now in 2020: from Tottenham's 'new Messi' tearing it up in Portugal to a player currently without a club.

GK: Aaron Ramsdale

A smash hit. Eddie Howe's surprise decision to start Ramsdale this season has paid off brilliantly, despite Bournemouth's struggles. After loan spells at Chesterfield and AFC Wimbledon, the 22-year-old is now tipped for senior England caps - while big clubs watch closely.

RB: Dujon Sterling

Pacey Chelsea full-back scored an own goal in the Euro U19 final but impressed otherwise, making the team of the tournament. Sterling (no relation) did well while loaned to Coventry in 2018/19, but struggled with injuries this season on loan at Wigan.

LB: Jay Dasilva

Trophy-lifting England U19 captain in 2017, Dasilva was loaned from Chelsea to Bristol City in 2018/19, where the now 22-year-old showcased his attacking skills. City signed him permanently last summer - but a fractured tibia meant he missed five months of this season.

CB: Easah Suliman

Aston Villa graduate broke new ground after signing for Primeira Liga side Vitoria in January. His debut, a 2-2 draw with Sporting CP, made Suliman the first player of Pakistani descent to play in Portugal's top flight. Has played for England up to U20 level, but is still eligible for Pakistan too.

CB: Darnell Johnson

Leicester defender had a horror start to his 2019 loan at Hibs: his debut against Celtic saw him put Emilio Izaguirre on a stretcher then get a two-game ban for his challenge. Ouch. The 21-year-old is back with the Foxes but playing in Premier League 2 for now.

MF: Tayo Edun

Sent off in the Euro U19 final, but made his Championship debut with Fulham the next season. Scored on debut on loan for Ipswich in 2018 - but signed permanently for Lincoln this January, where Imps manager Michael Appleton described Edun as "a Rolls-Royce" after a fine first start.

MF: Mason Mount

Euro U19 Player of the Tournament keeps on getting better. Superb on loan at Vitesse and Derby, Mount has been phenomenal at Frank Lampard's Chelsea this season. Already has six senior England caps - plus a goal - at age 21. A PFA Young Player of the Year contender (if Trent Alexander-Arnold didn't have it sewn up).

MF: Andre Dozzell

Ipswich playmaker, and son of club legend Jason, was once linked to the likes of Liverpool. But after scoring at just 16 years old in the Championship, he's struggled to live up to the hype. A cruciate ligament injury didn't help, though a contract extension to 2021 means Dozzell has next season to show his true class.

RW: Isaac Buckley-Ricketts

Manchester City graduate played all 90 minutes in the final - but is now without a club. Played six Eredivisie games on loan at Twente in 2017, before the winger moved permanently to Peterborough. However he failed to make an impact and was let go in September 2019.

LW: Ryan Sessegnon

Versatile prodigy signed for Tottenham for £25 million in 2019, yet the teenager who scorched opponents at Fulham has stalled. Scored in the Champions League in December but is yet to feature since Project Restart. Barcelona were linked with a shock move - so Sessegnon still has admirers. What can be going wrong in north London?

CF: Lukas Nmecha

Hamburg-born Nmecha scored the winner in the Euro U19 final, then played two Premier League matches for Man City. It's been loans ever since: Preston, Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, while now he's under Neil Warnock at Middlesbrough. Lucky him. Worryingly, began representing Germany U21s after switching in March 2019.

Sub: Ben Brereton

Actually finished joint top scorer at the Euro U19s after three group-stage goals, 21-year-old striker Brereton has since netted in the Championship for Nottingham Forest and for parent club Blackburn.

Sub: Josh Dasilva

Arsenal graduate midfielder never played for the Gunners but has shone since joining Brentford on a free. The 21-year-old has nine Championship goals and is a regular for the high-flying Bees this season.

Sub: Marcus Edwards

Many Spurs fans were furious to see a man Mauricio Pochettino once compared to a young Leo Messi let go on a free - and he's looked a star at Vitoria since, even scoring against Arsenal in the Europa League. Rumours are Tottenham may try to buy him back ASAP.
