Football has become about lavish spending, sadly. There's no way round it, that's just what it's become. And we have to accept it on some level, because not get into the transfer side of the sport is to deny one of the biggest elements of football.

Some clubs have more to spend than others and that means that there is an element of unfairness in the league. While clubs like Manchester City and Manchester United spend big and are able to compete for the title, sides such as Newcastle United or even Burnley cannot get anywhere near with their funds.

There is a thing such as buying the league. Man City, you could argue, did just that. Yet by the same token, there's something slightly off about saying that their brilliance last season was purely based and a result of the amount of money they had.

Take a look at Everton. They spent 100s of millions last season, but barely managed to keep themselves out of the relegation scrap. They did finish 8th but supporters expected much more given the amount of cash they spent the summer before.

You could say that spending is an art form. It's all well and good buying players for £50 or even £75 million, but it's another matter getting the players you bought to perform well.

And when you take Jurgen Klopp as an example, you could arguably say that he's one of the best buyers in the Premier League. Just take a look at this team he's assembled ever since joining up with the Reds in 2015.

OK, so Alisson, Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keïta are yet to play a competitive match for the Reds. But given Keïta's performances in pre-season, Alisson's display in the World Cup, and Shaqiri's Premier League experience, in which we know that he's an outstanding player, it's fair to say that Liverpool's buys have been pretty solid this summer.
