Real Madrid Ready To Splash €80m To Secure Luka Modrić's Successor

Real Madrid are ready to spend big on an up-and-coming star tipped to be the long-term replacement for Luka Modrić.

Luka Modrić has been a phenomenal player for Real Madrid, establishing himself as a powerful force in Los Blancos' midfield. That's not to mention his brilliant performance at the World Cup that led Croatia to the final and the 33-year-old to pick up the Golden Ball award.

Modrić isn't getting any younger, though.

That's not to say that he's dipped in form, but rather the Spanish club is looking at another promising star to be Modrić's long-term replacement.

The 13-time Champions League winners have apparently found that in Ajax's Frenkie de Jong, according to De Telegraaf (via Voetbalzone).

Real Madrid are keen to secure the services of the highly rated 21-year-old and are willing to part with €80m in a potential transfer.

However, there are already a long line of clubs that have shown interest in him, including Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

Press Association

Interestingly, Madrid aren't the only club to show recent interest in the Netherlands international, with Manchester United now linked with a move for the Ajax star.

"[Marc] Overmars is pleased to see how the European superpowers fight each other out of the tent [for him]," De Telegraaf wrote. "For the normally normal boy from Arkel, who is seen by the directors, trainers and scouts as one of the greatest European talents and where no-one wants to take a stand."

It would seem that de Jong's agent, Ali Dursun, didn't have a straight answer on the interest from United and Madrid.

Press Association

"I can neither confirm nor deny this," he said. "You have to ask Marc Overmars, because I send all the clubs that report to me [to him]."

De Jong arrived at Ajax in 2015 and came off the bench in the club's 2-0 defeat to United in the 2017 Europa League final.

Do you think de Jong would be the right fit for Madrid?
