Florentino Perez has reportedly attempting to exact transfer revenge on Manchester United by making it difficult for the club to sign Raphael Varane.

The French defender is a top target for United this summer and is believed to be open to a move to Old Trafford after failing to agree a new deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

There were claims that United would be willing to pay him a massive £10.3m annual salary and partner him with captain Harry Maguire at the heart of their backline.

But according to Defensa Central, Real Madrid president Perez will play hardball with United in retaliation for transfer "tricks" he feels the 13-time Premier League winners have played on them over the years.

Specifically, those supposed "tricks" are related to failed moves for both David De Gea and Paul Pogba, both of whom have been heavily courted by Los Blancos in recent years.

United and Real have done plenty of business in the past, including high-profile transfers involving David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria.

But Perez, who is demanding £56 million for Varane, intends to make it as tough as possible for United to land the 28-year-old.

Perez has already seen long-time skipper and Varane's defensive partner Sergio Ramos leave the Spanish capital after 16 seasons.

The Spaniard's contract expired and he was unable to agree on an extension. Ramos, 35, now looks set to continue his playing career with Paris Saint-Germain.

United, meanwhile, are hoping to make Varane their third signing of the summer following the captures of Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton.
