Liverpool's iconic Liver Building was set alight after a firework was aimed during chaotic celebrations following the Reds' first league title for 30 years.

After large crowds congregated outside Anfield on Thursday night following Jurgen Klopp's side being crowned champions thanks to Chelsea's win over Manchester City, thousands gathered at Pier Head on Friday.

And footage doing the rounds on social media shows a firework being shot at the Liver Building which overlooks the River Mersey.

Fans could be heard clapping and cheering as the firework was shot in the air, with the fire service coming to put out a small fire as a result.

As per the Liverpool Echo, Merseyside fire and rescue confirmed: "We were alerted to a small fire on a patch of astroturf. Firefighters have dealt with the incident and the fire is now out."

Mayor Joe Anderson, who earlier urged fans to go home and celebrate safely, condemned the behaviour and thanked those who listened.

Videos of the aftermath have been shared online, showing the pier scattered with rubbish as a major clean-up job is required.
