France Football have issued an apology to departing-Barcelona icon Andres Iniesta for failing to award him with the Ballon d'Or during his illustrious playing career.

The Spanish legend played his last final for Barcelona over the weekend before heading to the fledgling Chinese Super League. Well, if reports are anything to go by.

Barcelona thrashed Sevilla 5-0, with Iniesta getting on the score-sheet courtesy of an assist from Lionel Messi, and the influential Argentine also broke tradition by letting him collect the Copa del Rey trophy by himself.

Classy gesture.

And a few days removed from lifting another piece of silverware, France Football have apologised to Iniesta for never giving him the prestigious individual honour.

"He is the best game facilitator of all time," France Football wrote via Daily Mail.

"Most of his contemporaries complicate their lives, but he has had fun for about fifteen years, simplifying everything, without any conceited bad thoughts, just to make the game live.

"Iniesta's talent is to invent for others. Without him, Messi would have gotten tired much faster at Barca. His altruism has surely deprived him of even greater recognition.

"Among the great absences in the Golden Ball prize list, his is painful."

The 33-year-old bagged his 34th major title, and he collected the domestic Spanish cup in brilliant fashion.

Normally, the first and second captain (Iniesta and Messi) are supposed to come up together and raise the trophy.

However, Messi decided to let Iniesta go up by himself in his last final for Barcelona.

An end of an era.
