The Premier League have unveiled the match ball for the 2018/19 season and some folks on Twitter reckon it's basically just a big tribute to David Silva, undoubtedly one of the league's best players.

"Fewer panels" and "more goals' is the tagline that comes with the new ball but being honest, as long it's not a flyaway or Jabulani and we still get players banging in 30-yard worldies with it, then all is well.

But in addition to that, the new piece of kit from Nike has also been given the name 'Merlin' - hence the David Silva connection as the Manchester City magician is regularly given that moniker for his jaw-dropping moments of mastery on the pitch.

Despite a difficult season on a personal level, following the premature birth of his son Mateo, Silva was utterly sensational in Manchester City's record-breaking campaign - deservedly making the PFA Team of the Year after scoring nine and assisting eleven as Pep Guardiola's troops romped to an unprecedented 100 points.

Surely it's only right that Premier League chiefs are recognise one of the most technically gifted players ever to turn out on these shores with the name of the new ball?

Plenty made the same joke on Twitter:

Thoughts on the new ball? Do you care as long as it's round and goes in the net?

Sound off in the comments.
