Football fans across the country are calling for Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher to receive knighthoods for their incredible battle against the proposed European Super League.

Neville and Carragher led the protestations as 12 clubs - including England's 'big six' - agreed to join a new competition.

However, intense backlash prompted every Premier League side to withdraw with the ESL suspended as a result.

Fans rejoiced online as they have their beautiful game back. They also gave a special mention to United legend Neville and Liverpool hero Carragher for their brilliant role in leading the charge against the controversial project.

Supporters even reckon the pundits deserve a knighthood for the part they played in stopping the ESL from coming to fruition.

One tweeted: "Give Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher a knighthood, they've actually helped unite football fans of clubs with the biggest rivalries for the greater good of the game."

A second wrote: "Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher deserve a f**king knighthood."

A third added: "Surely there will be a knighthood for Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher."

Despite the English clubs pulling out of the competition, Neville hopes each team gets a massive fine for attempting to breakaway.

Speaking after Chelsea's goalless draw with Brighton, he said: "The fact that City have enacted their withdrawal and it looks like Chelsea is on the way, it's done, it's finished.

"They'll have their PR teams and comms teams scrambling around, trying to make this look as lovely as possible in the next 24 hours - working out the right time to withdraw."

He added: "Perez might have them on a £100 million fine to withdraw. Perez might have them on a massive fine.

"I hope so. I hope Perez has got them on a massive fine to withdraw, the lot of them."
