Fan Creates Thread Claiming To Explain Why Lionel Messi's 91-Goal Year Is 'Overrated'

A fan has created a thread claiming to prove that Lionel Messi's outrageous 91-goal year in 2012 is "overrated".

Nine years ago, a 25-year-old Messi delivered what many have believed to be the greatest ever calendar year from a professional footballer.

His absurd tally of 91 goals for club and country was scored in 69 games. 79 were scored for Barcelona, with the other 12 coming in Argentina colours.

And yet Cristiano Ronaldo fan @Cronaldo7F reckons Messi's achievements, which secured him a fourth consecutive Ballon d'Or, weren't all that impressive and accused him of stat padding.

The twitter user believes a lot of Messi's goals came against "small teams" - mentioning his strikes against the likes of Real Zaragoza, Malaga and Espanyol.

He then states the fact that Messi had a glorious midfield trio of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets pulling the strings behind him, before claiming he didn't turn up in the big games.

Although he describes Messi as "phenomenal that year", his evidence for that statement is Messi's missed penalty in the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea and him "not making a difference" in a decisive El Clasico fixture against Real Madrid.

Further lazy points include only 13 of Messi's 91 goals coming in the Champions League and 14 being penalties.

After all, Messi's 2012 saw him smash the previous world record of 85 goals in a calendar year set by Germany and Bayern Munich striker Gerd Müller 40 years prior.

He conjured up five-goal and four-goal hauls against Bayer Leverkusen and Arsenal respectively, also notching 59 goals in 38 La Liga games, bagging nine hat-tricks and averaging a goal every 66 minutes.

Deeming a player scoring 91 one goals "overrated" might just be the silliest take of all time.
