Nemanja Matic Set To Given New Position Against Spurs
Nemanja Matic looks set to play his first match of the season tonight against Spurs - but the Manchester United midfielder looks set to start in central defence for the Red Devils.
United have struggled with their defensive options since the beginning of the campaign, with central defenders Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly both having an absolutely torrid time against Brighton last weekend.
Chris Smalling was an unused sub during the 3-2 defeat on the south coast, whilst Phil Jones has been left in the stands.
That being said, Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News seems to think it's Matic who'll deputise at the heart of defence this evening:
Having lost to Brighton, United are in need of a big win against Mauricio Pochettino's side as they try and keep pressure on their rivals.
What do you think of the idea of starting Matic at centre-back, particularly if other options are fit and available?
Here's how social media reacted to the news:
The signs are on the wall, the end is near.- Maartial:red_circle: (@MaarUtd) August 27, 2018
He'd just play him there to make a point. Like a spoilt child not getting a new toy. I really like and rate Mourinho but if he does this when he has recognised CB's available he's just being petty.- Tony Colino (@TheGR8Colino) August 27, 2018
Great, now he can slow down the play from the back instead of the middle of the park.- Tim Shepperson (@TimSheps6) August 27, 2018
Always actually thought a 3-5-2 would be good with Matic in the centre of the back 3. Has the head to be in the right position and also a lot better on the ball than any other option at the back- Michael Fee (@mfee04) August 27, 2018
Why play him there when you have Smalling,Romo and Jones on the bench- cyprizzy (@cyprianof) August 27, 2018
