After retiring in 2015, Pablo Aimar is back! The 37-year-old is to come out of retirement to play for boyhood club Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto.

The former Valenica, Benfica and River Plate midfielder will make his sensational return to the pitch at the club where it all began over 20 years ago.

The playmaker began his footballing journey with Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto and returns to the Cordoba based club, after being named in their squad for the Copa Argentina.

Following eight years with Estudiantes in the youth ranks, Aimar switched to River Plate where he eventually broke into the senior side before moving to Europe.

He was snapped up by Valencia where he rose to prominence starring in their star-studded squad circa 2005. After spending six seasons at the Mestalla, Aimar moved to Zaragoza then Benfica.

Following his stint in Europe, Aimar moved to Asia eventually retiring with a second spell at River Plate. But after a successful 19-year playing career, Aimar will once again lace up the boots.

In 2015, after announcing his retirement, fellow compatriot Lionel Messi admitted he was one his of childhood idols, saying; "A great player is retiring, one of my idols."

Estudiantes, nor the player, have officially confirmed the news though the player is included in their provisional squad for this year's domestic cup that involves 99 teams from across the pyramid, per Goal.

The player nicknamed 'El Payasito' has regularly trained with the third-tier side in the past alongside his brother. Welcome back, Pablo!
