Fabian Delph's return to the England set-up has been short-lived, with news breaking that the Manchester City midfielder has pulled out of Gareth Southgate's squad with a muscle injury.

Delph, an £8 million signing from Aston Villa in 2015, has been plagued by injuries in recent years and struggled for game-time at the Etihad Stadium.

He lost his place in the England squad as a result but was brought back in by Southgate after taking advantage of the ACL injury suffered by Benjamin Mendy at City, and filling in at left-back with distinction.

The Leeds United youth product was outstanding in wins over Shakhtar Donetsk and Chelsea last week but won't be taking to the pitch for World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Lithuania due to a muscle strain.

An official statement on The FA website says that having reported to St. George's Park on Sunday evening, and trained today, Delph has travelled back to Manchester for treatment and has been replaced by Spurs midfielder Harry Winks, who receives his first call-up to the full England squad.

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has also been forced to pull out of the squad.

Delph made his England bow in September 2014 against Norway and has been capped nine teams, his last appearance in a Three Lions shirt coming in November 2015 against Spain.

Manchester City fans will no doubt be hoping that Delph's injury isn't too serious given that they are already thin in the full-back positions as it is.
