Dutch Legend Slams Memphis Depay's Off Field Behaviour

Dutch legend says Depay acted like a clown at Old Trafford.

"The new Ronaldo." Remember a time when Manchester United fans hoped that's what Memphis Depay would be, long after that's what Nani and no one else but Nani thought he was. Now at Lyon he's come under 'attack' from a fellow Dutchman.

Depay was fresh off being the Eredivisie's top scorer when he moved to Manchester United in 2015, unfortunately for them and him he ended up being more Mateja Kezman then Ruud van Nistelrooy.

After just one full season at Old Trafford, and a handful of appearances this season, Jose Mourinho decided to cut his losses in January and sell Depay to Lyon for around £16 million, potentially rising to £22 million with bonuses.

The club clearly hold some hope for the young forward as they included a buy back clause in the deal with the French side.

After three goals in seven performances it sounds like he's got things back on track but Dutch footballing legend Ronald de Boer has had a go at him and compared his off pitch 'antics' to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Talking to Sport360, De Boer said:

"He has his characteristics and perhaps he can be smarter at times.

"When people expect you to do things and you don't deliver, don't do other things to attract attention.

"Aubameyang, I saw him in a blue suit, an ugly one in which he looked like a clown, but it is accepted because he is scoring goals, so everyone laughs about it.

"But if you are not scoring goals and playing bad, people will say he is thinking more about his clothes or whatever.

"They have to be smart, you really have to work.

"The only thing I thought when I saw him playing was that you cannot stand on the ball and have time, in England they are much stronger and faster, you have to adapt.

"He did not really do that. He's got it but thought he could do it standing still, he did not do it while moving.

"You need a good start.

"When you have doubts and they do not go away there is more pressure and people expect.

After his start in Ligue 1 it seems like a strange time to be attacking Depay. His confidence whilst in the Premier League was no doubt knocked and it's always good to see a player rebuild after a difficult spell.
