Injured Sunderland midfielder Duncan Watmore helped saved three people in a devastating boat crash while on holiday in Barbados.

Watmore has been on the sidelines after damaging his cruciate ligament against Leicester in December and was allowed to go on holiday by boss David Moyes as he steps up recovery.

The 23-year old was staying at the Colony Club resort in Barbados with his girlfriend Sophie and went on a fishing trip last month.

However, when out in the water, a catamaran crashed into the speedboat they were on in what was a frightening turn of events.

Watmore saved three elderly passengers, including climbing onto the catamaran and helping pull the passengers onto the boat, as well as wrapping his t-shirt around one pensioner to stem the bleeding on a severe cut on her leg. The passenger was taken to hospital as a result of her injuries.

SPORTbible managed to get in touch with Duncan's father Ian, former Chief executive of the FA, who disclosed the text that he received from his son following the traumatic situation.

Watmore described the turn of events as "crazy stuff" and says that if he wasn't there, the three elderly passengers, one of whom couldn't swim and had recently had a hip operation, probably would not have been able to get up on the catamaran.

He also paid tribute to a chef at the hotel and referred to him as a "hero" thanks to his bravery.

Recalling the terrifying ordeal, Watmore wrote:

"Never seen anything like it, completely destroyed the fishing boat. One of women is in hospital with severely cut leg but everyone else seemed ok apart from bruises and cuts etc. And mainly shock. I helped save 3 pensioners, one of whom couldn't swim and just had a hip operation, the other one was 80 and the other one had really bad cut leg. If I wasn't there they probably weren't gonna be able to get up on the catamaran. The chef of the hotel who took us fishing was a hero, he was lifting them up as our boat was sinking and I climbed onto catamaran and was pulling them up from there. We got everyone up just as our boat went fully under and then the chef managed to climb up himself. Him and one of the guy who couldn't swim completely burst into tears when they got back saying they thought they were gonna die, crazy crazy stuff. Me and sophie still bit shaken up but we'll be ok. tied my t shirt around the woman's leg to stop bleeding."

The incident happened in February and Ian Watmore says both Duncan and his girlfriend Sophie are okay and that the England U21 international is now back on the rehab trail and is targeting a return to action in time for next season.
