Donny van de Beek's luck has turned from bad to worse after it was confirmed he has been ruled out of Euro 2020.

The midfielder was included in Frank de Boer's 26-man Netherlands squad despite barely featuring for Manchester United in his debut campaign.

But the 24-year-old has picked up an undisclosed injury and will play no part in the tournament, as revealed in a statement on the official Netherlands channels.

With days until the campaign begins, no replacement will be drafted in by the Netherlands, who are in Group C alongside Ukraine, Austria and North Macedonia.

The KNVB said: "Donny van de Beek has to let the European championship pass by. The Manchester United midfielder is struggling with an injury.

"As a result, the 19-time international, who last played minutes in Orange in March during Gibraltar - Netherlands (0-7), is not available in time for the European Championship. National coach Frank de Boer does not call for a replacement for Van de Beek."

The Euros heartbreak follows an immensely difficult season for Van de Beek. He joined United from Ajax in a £40 million move but made just four starts and 19 overall appearances in the Premier League.

Playing just 511 minutes of league football and restricted to cameos from the bench due to finding himself behind the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Fred, Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic at Old Trafford.
