Barcelona new boy Sergino Dest has revealed he could not understand Lionel Messi in their first meeting.

Dest signed for the Blaugrana in a €26 million deal from Ajax and became the first American to turn out for the club in an official game when he made his debut in the 1-1 draw with Sevilla on Sunday.

It was a proud moment for the young right-back but he's admitted that there were some communication issues with captain Messi given the language barrier.

"Today I saw everyone, Messi too," Dest told Dutch outlet NOS.

"Messi doesn't speak English, but it was very special to meet him.

"If I'm honest, I don't know what he told me, but we were both smiling, so everything must be fine, right?"

As long as he is able to give Messi the ball and let him do his thing, not being able to understand him shouldn't be the end of the world.

However, Dest did have a bit of a stinker in his Barcelona presentation at the Nou Camp. Even though these things don't matter at all, he was well out of sync while trying to show off his skills, dropping the ball and then struggling to flick it back up again.

Having turned down European champions Bayern Munich, the 19-year-old has taken the No.2 shirt vacated by Nelson Semedo after his transfer to Wolves and has revealed he idolised Barca icon Ronaldinho.

"I chose Barcelona because I have always dreamed of playing for Barca," he stated.

"Ronaldinho is my idol and a legend at this club. When I found out about Barca's interest, I didn't have to think twice."
